President Trump: U.S. Won't Become a ‘Migrant Camp’

“President Trump challenged Democrats to ‘come to the table’ to fix the country’s immigration system, saying Monday that the current battle is over whether the U.S. should have borders,” Stephen Dinan reports in The Washington Times. The President said that “if Congress can find agreement on a way to update what he called the ‘worst immigration laws in the entire world’ it could be a trendsetting move for the rest of the globe,” Dinan adds.

In the Washington Examiner, Katelyn Caralle writes that “the portion of U.S. adults satisfied with the direction of the country is now 38 percent, a 12-year high, according to a new Gallup poll released Monday.” Caralle notes that “the increase comes in the wake of positive economic news, including historically low unemployment rates. President Trump's summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore, part of Trump's effort to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, was also supported by most.”

“Economic confidence among lower-income Americans has taken a recent leap, the latest evidence that benefits of the economic expansion are reaching a broader swath of workers,” Sarah Chaney reports for The Wall Street Journal. “A tightening labor market and increased take-home pay from the tax cut passed in December are likely translating into a renewed sense of confidence among lower-income Americans.”

In CNBC, Michael Sheetz and Amanda Macias report that President Trump has directed the Defense Department to “immediately begin the process necessary to establish a space force as the sixth branch of the armed forces.” The President explained that “our destiny beyond the Earth is not only a matter of national identity but a matter of national security.”

In the Telegraph-Herald [paywall], Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) writes that “tax reform is working. For the first time in three decades, taxpayers are able to keep more of their own hard-earned money and decide for themselves how to use it. They’re able to reinvest in their businesses, save for homes and their children’s college tuitions and contribute to their retirement plans.”
