Flexibility marks strategic reshuffle in Middle East By Rana Mazid | China Daily | Updated: 2026-06-29 08:58

For decades, the Middle East's strategic map was deceptively simple. Washington was the indispensable architect, and most Arab states built their security, economy, and foreign policies around that pillar.
But the US-Israeli war against Iran shattered that old order. As Iranian missiles struck Saudi energy facilities and US bases in Bahrain and Qatar, Gulf states realized the harsh truth that the US security umbrella was no longer absolute. The era of unchallenged US primacy was giving way to a fluid, multipolar order.

Testament to 'China Opportunity 2.0' appeal: China Daily editorial
chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2026-06-29 20:25
In an era marked by rapid global economic shifts and rising uncertainties, the concept of "China Opportunity 2.0" has emerged as a symbol of new possibilities for international trade and innovation.
While some China doomsters have expressed "anxiety" over China's advances in technology and industrial innovation, even promoting the narrative of a so-called "China Shock 2.0" that groundlessly frames China's development as a "threat" to the global economy, the reality is that "China Opportunity 2.0", as Chinese Premier Li Qiang said last week, represents comprehensive innovation-driven empowerment and high-return investment prospects. Speaking at the 17th Annual Meeting of the New Champions of the World Economic Forum in Northeast China's coastal city of Dalian, Li underscored China's potential to offer high-return investment prospects and its fostering of mutually beneficial technological collaboration worldwide.

When we picture engines of economic growth and job creation, we tend to think of large multinational companies and global brands. Yet, in emerging and developing economies, it is primarily micro, small, and medium-sized businesses that play this critical role.
Small and medium-sized businesses represent around 90 percent of all businesses worldwide, and account for more than half of global employment. In developing countries, these businesses are critical to economic diversity and poverty reduction, creating jobs that provide not just incomes but also purpose and dignity for people within their local communities.

Across the low- and middle-income Arab economies in Africa and Asia, 90 percent of adults own a phone, higher than the world’s low- and middle-income average of 84 percent. In countries like Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon, high rates of smartphone ownership are driving higher than average internet use. Social media is popular, with nearly 60 percent of adults across the region engaging on these platforms. People also read news online, access learning materials, and increasingly use government services. The highest share of adults accessing online information to learn, train, or educate is in Lebanon and the West Bank.

Financed with World Bank Group support, the government’s 5-7-9 loan program has helped subsidize borrowing costs for over 20,000 firms across the country.

In this new episode, we explore a new way of understanding development outcomes across a lifetime: the Human Capital Index Plus (HCI+).
A child born today in Sub-Saharan Africa could earn nearly 70% more over their lifetime, if health, learning, and work systems functioned differently. So what’s holding that future back?
Joined by Norbert Schady, Chief Economist for the People Vice Presidency at the World Bank Group and Dr. Zainab Kwaru Muhammad-Idris, President of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, the conversation unpacks what the HCI+ measures, why Sub-Saharan Africa faces a deep human capital crisis, and how some countries and programs are already beating the odds.
Aiming to slash Azneft's emissions to zero by 2022: SOCAR sets ambitions to tackle a critical climate issue

A partner in the World Bank's Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR), SOCAR shares its track record and future plans for gas flaring reduction.
Azerbaijan has steadily curtailed the polluting practice of gas flaring – from 333 million cubic meters (mcm) per year in 2012 to 135 per year in 2020, according to satellite-based estimates made by GGFR. Meanwhile, its flaring intensity, the amount of flaring per barrel of oil produced, has also declined over time–speaking to the efficiency with which associated gas is utilized.

Gas flaring, the burning of natural gas associated with oil extraction, has persisted since the beginning of oil production, some 160 years ago. It takes place due to a range of issues, from market and economic constraints, to a lack of appropriate regulation and political will, and results in substantial carbon dioxide, methane and black carbon (soot) emissions. Eliminating this practice from oil production is the very least oil and gas operators can do to limit their direct emissions and will help countries achieve their Paris Agreement goals, advancing their path to decarbonization and renewable energy sources. Indeed, if all flaring was eliminated, it would reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by 400 million tons each year.
We can end routine gas flaring by 2030. Here's how Zubin Bamji March 01, 2021 This page in: English

We are now less than a decade away from the goal of Zero Routine Flaring by 2030, an ambition that sits at the nexus of climate change mitigation and energy policy. Developed by the World Bank and launched in 2015 by the UN, World Bank and several governments, along with oil companies and development institutions, the Zero Routine Flaring initiative is designed to end an oil industry practice that has existed since oil production first began more than 150 years ago.

Geopolitical tensions and the war in Ukraine have upended the global energy landscape. This has forced many countries to make difficult decisions to ensure they have secure energy supplies while also accelerating the uptake of renewable sources of energy. One clear solution that can boost energy security —while significantly cutting greenhouse gas emissions and expanding energy access in developing countries—is using the gas currently being flared and vented around the world, so called “associated gas.”

2025 Global Gas Flaring Tracker Report
https://www.worldbank.org/en/programs/gasflaringreduction/publication/2025-global-gas-flaring-tracker-report
Highlights
In 2024, flaring surged by 3 billion cubic meters (bcm) to 151bcm, the highest level since 2007. The top nine flaring countries continue to account for three-quarters of all flaring, but less than half of global oil production.
More than half a billion people still lack reliable access to electricity. The associated gas wastefully burned each year is equivalent to Africa's total annual gas consumption.
389 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMtCO2e) emissions, including 46 MMtCO2e in the form of unburnt methane, were released by flares in 2024.
Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 (ZRF)
https://www.worldbank.org/en/programs/zero-routine-flaring-by-2030
About the "Zero Routine Flaring by 2030" Initiative
Launched in 2015, the ZRF Initiative commits governments and oil companies, to end routine flaring no later than 2030.
Gas flaring is the 160-year-old industry practice of wastefully burning, rather than using or conserving, associated gas, a by-product of oil production.
The flaring of gas contributes to climate change and impacts the environment through the emission of CO2, black carbon and other pollutants. It also wastes a valuable energy resource that could be used to advance the sustainable development of producing countries.

On January 15 the World Bank’s Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) Partnership hosted a technical webinar to showcase significant advancements in monitoring global emissions from gas flaring. The session brought together over 160 participants from 40 countries, representing 70 organizations—including government ministries and regulators, academia, civil society, private sector, and multilateral development banks.
From Inception to Impact: Turning Wasted Gas into Energy Security

Many countries are juggling a tough energy balancing act: keeping up with growing demand while minimizing the environmental impacts from producing energy and capturing the full economic value of their natural resources. It’s especially difficult for developing countries, where expertise, resources, and budgets are often constrained.
While this balancing act will surely continue for quite some time, it’s important we recognize there are some relatively easy ways to better manage it.

Financing Solutions to Reduce Natural Gas Flaring and Methane Emissions
https://www.worldbank.org/en/programs/gasflaringreduction/publication/financing-solutions-to-reduce-natural-gas-flaring-and-methane-emissions
Report Highlights
Gas flaring, the burning of natural gas associated with oil extraction, results from market and economic constraints and a lack of appropriate regulation and political will. One major barrier is attracting the necessary investment to tackle the roughly 2,000 medium-sized flares cost-effectively.
Annually, gas flaring results in more than 400 million tons of CO2-equivalent emissions and other pollutants, including methane. Medium-sized flares, which account for 60 percent of the emissions, are too small for traditional large-scale approaches to flare reduction but large enough to require significant financial investments.
Together with governments and oil companies, we must accelerate action to end routine gas flaring and reduce methane emissions worldwide while investing in infrastructure to capture, store, and conserve or use natural gas.

Transforming Oil and Gas Operations to Curb Flaring and Methane emissions
The Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) Partnership's first Annual Progress Report highlights how, in just one year, the Partnership has transitioned from inception to impact, supporting projects in 17 countries that collectively account for over a quarter of global methane emissions from oil and gas operations and nearly two-fifths of global flaring.
Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Partnership (GFMR)
https://www.worldbank.org/en/programs/gasflaringreduction
The World Bank's Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) is a multi-donor trust fund supported by governments, companies, and multilateral organizations committed to ending routine gas flaring and reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector.
To help developing countries rapidly cut flaring and methane emissions, GFMR provides governments and state-owned entities with programmatic support. This includes catalytic grant funding, technical assistance, policy and regulatory reform advisory services, institutional strengthening, and mobilizing finance to jump-start and accelerate the deployment of flaring and methane reduction solutions.
Gas Flaring
During oil production, the associated natural gas, composed mainly of methane, is often treated as waste, and flared (burned) or vented directly into the atmosphere. This occurs when economic, regulatory, technical, or infrastructure barriers prevent it from being used as a fuel or when re-injecting it back into the reservoir is not possible.

Barring a miracle, the 2020s will prove to be what their ominous opening foreshadowed: a lost decade—not just for a couple of outliers, but for dozens of developing economies. Amid one of the densest clusters of global shocks since the 1970s, nearly one out of every two developing economies has failed since 2019 to advance on the most rudimentary promise of development: narrowing the income gap with the world’s most prosperous economies. For light at the end of the tunnel, you’d have to look to the 2030s.

Dwindling Humanitarian Aid Devastates the Rohingyas in the World’s Largest Refugee Camp
By Oritro Karim
UNITED NATIONS, Jun 22 2026 (IPS) - Nearly nine years after the violent persecution of the Rohingya minority population in Myanmar and the following mass exodus of refugees, over 1.2 million Rohingya currently reside in neighbouring Bangladesh, where they face immense challenges. With the United Nations (UN) recording significant shortfalls in global humanitarian funding, alongside Bangladesh’s diminishing ability to support these populations, experts warn of a deepening humanitarian crisis.
GlobalSouth News
Described by the UN as “the most persecuted minority in the world,” Rohingya refugees experience a state of statelessness, where they are not legally recognized as citizens by any country and lack legal rights. The vast majority of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh reside in the densely populated camps of Cox’s Bazar, where they face widespread insecurity and systemic gaps in access to basic services, such as healthcare, education, food, and clean water.

Beyond Commemoration: Why Conflict-Related Sexual Violence Demands Urgent Global Attention
By Mariya Salim
DELHI, India, Jun 25 2026 (IPS) - Three years ago, during a mission to the Central African Republic from United Nations Headquarters, I met a woman whose story has remained with me ever since. She had survived rape during the conflict. Yet what stayed with her most was not only the violence she had suffered, but the stigma that followed it. When she returned home, her family refused to take her back. In a society where survivors of sexual violence are too often burdened with shame that rightfully belongs to perpetrators, she found herself isolated and struggling to rebuild her life. In that moment, it became painfully clear that for survivors, the violence does not end when the assault ends, it continues through stigma, exclusion, and the resulting silence for most.

Conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) does not end when the act itself ends. Its consequences ripple through families, communities, and generations and that is precisely why more needs to be done to not just address it but prevent it from happening in the first place.

UNCTAD: A Shift of Risk, Geopolitical Tension Weighs on Global Markets Heavier than Trade Policy
By Maximilian Malawista
UNITED NATIONS, Jun 25 2026 (IPS) - Amidst increased geopolitical tensions, the risk of volatile energy markets, trade corridors, and regional stability in the Middle East has garnered more attention than trade policy in terms of its power to alter the global economy, according to new findings from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
GlobalSouth News
In their report on trade and development, “Global Economy Faces a Geopolitical Challenge”, UNCTAD says that a protracted escalation “raises the likelihood of deeper disruptions in global trade and finance, potentially, foreshadowing a cascading crisis”.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Jun 26 2026 (IPS) - Leadership of the Global South has gradually declined since the 1980s. Many hope BRICS+ will fill the vacuum, but its purpose and membership suggest such hopes may be misplaced. A repurposed Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) offers the best way forward.

Aid Is Falling Fast. What Can African Countries Do?
By Chie Aoyagi, Maurizio Leonardi, Athene Laws and Hamza Mighri
WASHINGTON DC, Jun 26 2026 (IPS) - For decades, official development assistance has been a central pillar of financing in sub-Saharan Africa. That pillar is now weakening—quickly and broadly.
GlobalSouth News
In 2025, bilateral aid to the region fell sharply, with early estimates pointing to cuts of about 26 percent in a single year. Multilateral support is also under pressure, with major institutions projecting sizeable budget reductions. More cuts may follow as donors reset priorities in a shifting geopolitical environment.

NEW YORK, Jun 26 2026 (IPS) - Artificial intelligence (AI) promises remarkable gains in productivity, science, medicine and education. But it is also poised to wipe out millions of jobs, hollow out the middle class, and drain the tax revenues that pay for hospitals, schools and pensions. The process has already begun, and the time to act is running out.
GlobalSouth News
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates that AI will affect almost 40% of jobs worldwide. In advanced economies, around 60% of jobs are exposed and as many as one in three (33%) human jobs are at high risk of being replaced by AI. In emerging markets, about 40% are exposed, with roughly one in four (24%) at high displacement risk; and in low-income countries, an estimated 26%, with close to one in five (18%) human jobs lost to AI.

LONDON & DAR ES SALAAM, Jun 25 2026 (IPS) - Before anyone called her an innovator, before artificial intelligence entered the conversation, before solar-powered cold rooms, before the language of sustainable development, Shifra Ainomugisha knew food loss in its painful form. GlobalSouth News
At dawn, she would grab a bucket and walk into rows of tomato plants on her family’s farm in Western Uganda to collect what had already been lost.
The tomatoes looked healthy from a distance. But many had softened, burst, or spoilt before reaching the market – the true meaning of food loss.

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay, Jun 26 2026 (IPS) - On 21 June Colombians made their choice. By the narrowest of margins, Abelardo de la Espriella, a far-right criminal lawyer who’s never held elected office, became president-elect. Climate activists, human rights defenders, Indigenous communities and peace advocates have the most to lose from the incoming government’s agenda.
GlobalSouth News
The election results follow the logic of a decade of deepening polarisation. Since the 2016 Peace Accord with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia began a contested and incomplete transition away from armed conflict, Colombian society has divided into two mutually hostile blocs. The election further revealed that no middle ground remains between them. The mainstream right is gone, its candidate receiving a humiliating 6.3 per cent of the first-round vote, and a new right, harsher and less constrained by institutional norms, has taken its place.

LONDON & KARACHI, Pakistan, Jun 26 2026 (IPS) - The 30 COP gatherings may not have done what three months of US-Israeli war against Iran did: expose the world’s vulnerability to fossil fuels. GlobalSouth News
As the world faced its biggest energy shock in a decade, the case for investing in clean energy suddenly became far more compelling.
As an intense heatwave grips Europe, with London’s Met Office issuing a “risk to life” warning and the closure of shops, offices and schools alongside disruptions to transport during the London Climate Action Week (LCAW), calls for this shift are gaining even greater momentum.
