WASHINGTON, D.C., JULY 2, 2026 - The World Bank Group has announced a new project to support the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, to reduce the risk of devastating floods and strengthen the state's capacity to manage weather-related disasters, mitigating impacts on the economy while protecting jobs and lives.
The US$ 119.2 million project will benefit approximately 420,000 people across 54 municipalities, many of them low-income residents living in high-risk areas who stand to gain the most from lasting, reliable flood protection.

BEIJING, July 7, 2026 — China’s economy stayed resilient in early 2026, supported by strong high-tech investment and exports, according to the World Bank’s latest China Economic Update, Rebalancing Growth.
The report shows that policy support, high-tech investment, and buffers against global energy supply disruptions partly offset weaker domestic demand in the second quarter. However, as the property sector continues to adjust to lower housing demand and consumers remain cautious, growth is projected to slow to 4.4% in 2026. Growth is expected to ease further to 4.3% in 2027, as progress in rebalancing the economy toward consumption remains gradual.

The World Bank Group’s beverage price index eased further in 2026Q2 to a level about one-third lower than a year earlier. This reversal of the preceding sharp rise in prices reflects improved supply prospects for both cocoa and coffee. After surging by 18 percent in 2025, the index is projected to decline by 30 percent in 2026, before stabilizing in 2027. Beverage markets are expected to face limited disruptions from the conflict in the Middle East but could be affected by a stronger‑than‑expected El Niño.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Around 6 million adults in Madagascar, nearly 40% of the population, lack a birth certificate, limiting access to jobs, financial services, and basic rights.
A new 2026 law enables birth certificates to be issued at scale, building on nationwide biometric enrollment supported by the PRODIGY Project, financed by the World Bank and the Global Financing Facility, which has already registered over 3.25 million adults.
Reaching the most excluded people remains the next frontier, requiring sustained outreach and further reforms to ensure no one is left without legal identity.
Financing Firm Growth The Role of Capital Markets in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
https://www.ifc.org/en/insights-reports/2025/financing-firm-growth
New research highlights how equity and bond markets foster growth in developing economies, contributing $4 trillion in capital and generating 5 percent more jobs over three decades. Deeper capital markets channel more investment toward productive firms, helping them expand and fueling development.
How Private Capital—By and For Women—Can Be Good for Business
https://www.ifc.org/en/insights-reports/2025/expanding-opportunities-for-women-via-private-equity-venture-capital
Private equity and venture capital are important sources of funding for companies, helping to shape their development at all stages. New IFC research finds that these funds could do more to channel capital to women-owned and run companies. The study also found that if these funds had more women making investment decisions, more funding would flow to women-owned businesses—and that this would not come at the price of lowering their portfolios’ financial performance.

Fit to Prosper: How Health, Nutrition, and Early Childhood Development Can Power Growth in Western and Central Africa

A child's future does not begin at birth. It is shaped during the first 2,000 days — from conception through age 5 — when maternal care, nutrition, early stimulation, and the strength of the health system shape brain development and physical growth. But the opportunity does not end there. Adolescence offers a second critical window to protect gains, support girls’ health and nutrition, and prepare the conditions for young people to learn, work, and thrive in parenthood. This is at the heart of a future-fit health strategy for Western and Central Africa: investing early, sustaining support through adolescence, and building the human capital that will determine whether a generation drives economic growth or faces preventable setbacks.

The Unfinished Digital Revolution: Expanding Internet Access
The Unfinished Digital Revolution: Expanding Internet Access
Internet access has grown at remarkable speed, yet digital opportunity remains deeply unequal. While networks now reach much of the world, millions of people, especially in poorer countries, are still shut out of the digital economy. The reasons go beyond infrastructure, and reflect gaps in affordability, skills, and inclusive policy design.

The internet is now essential to daily life, connecting people to education, jobs, finance, and public services. Yet billions of people are still offline. Without reliable connectivity, people are less able to participate in digital markets, access online education, use e-government services, or benefit from emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
Three insights from the Atlas of Global Development 2026 help explain why the digital revolution remains unfinished.

Trade finance is a pillar of international trade, yet it remains one of the most understudied areas in international economics. The reason is simple: data is scarce. Banks do not publicly disclose details on the trade finance they provide, and only a handful of countries record payment methods when goods go through customs. Viet Nam is one of the rare exceptions. That made it possible to learn something we have long suspected but could not properly measure: the use of trade finance is not mainly about what firms trade or which country they trade with. It is, above all, about what kind of firm the trader is.

Anyone who works on development knows this stylized fact: as income rises, fertility falls. In the latest available data, each doubling of GDP per capita is associated with about 0.6 fewer children per woman (Figure 1, on the right). The link was steeper in 1990 (on the left), around 0.8 fewer children per doubling, but the basic pattern has stayed the same.

Project FASTT
Project FASTT
Retail fast payments (also known as instant, real-time, immediate, or rapid payments) across payment service providers allow for immediate fund availability to beneficiaries and can be used on a 24/7/365 basis. As fast payment systems (FPS) evolve, they enable a diverse set of payment service providers (banks and non-banks) and support a variety of payment instruments, use cases (domestic and cross-border), transaction channels, and overlay services. The Payment Systems Development Group (PSDG) of the World Bank has assisted more than 120 countries in modernizing their payment systems over the years and, more recently, has played a leading role in global research and technical assistance to countries on fast payments. Project FASTT, is a new milestone in this critical work, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through the Finance for Development (F4D) Umbrella Program. Project FASTT has several pillars such as technical assistance to central banks and other payment ecosystem stakeholders, data and knowledge products, capacity building, and convening.

As cloud technologies mature, they are becoming increasingly standardized and interchangeable, shifting competition away from customized solutions toward simpler offerings, where differentiation is primarily driven by cost.

Women are living longer, but not necessarily better. Women in low-income countries will live seven years more than their mothers did. Those in middle-income countries will have three more years of life. These additional years will not necessarily be good ones. A lifetime of disadvantages in access to quality health services, income, jobs, and care, all limit women’s ability to thrive and continue contributing as they age. Policies and programs that help aging women in low- and middle-income countries remain healthy and independent will benefit everyone.

Dean Karlan now has a substack. He discusses his responses to some of the repeated debate about the role of RCTs and micro vs macro approaches in development. “A microeconomist can’t tell you how to make Kenya rich. But she can tell you which of several candidate strategies, based on prior theory and evidence, is most likely to get more kids into school, keep them healthy, move them into the workforce, or help girls delay marriage to a healthier age. These things matter, a lot of money rides on them, and (critically) the right answer is often less than obvious. If we can do each of those even 10% better, I count those as wins” Here is the Todd Moss post that Dean is responding to.

Since 1987, the global income classification landscape has changed significantly, with the share of economies classified as low-income declining from 30% to 11%. These shifts have not been evenly distributed, however, with some countries moving across income groups much faster than others. This year’s update to the World Bank Group Country Income Classifications shows six countries moved to a higher income category, but each has a different story to tell: a country emerging from economic crisis, an export powerhouse outpacing its peers, and an economy that turned out to be 10% larger than previously thought are just three of them.

Reporting Highlights
Chinese Tech Support: Microsoft is using engineers in China to help maintain the Defense Department’s computer systems — with minimal supervision by U.S. personnel.
Skills Gap: Digital escorts often lack the technical expertise to police foreign engineers with far more advanced skills, leaving highly sensitive data vulnerable to hacking.
Ignored Warnings: Various people involved in the work told ProPublica that they warned Microsoft that the arrangement is inherently risky, but the company launched and expanded it anyway.

MUNICH / BRUSSELS , Jul 7 2026 (IPS) - The 2030 agenda cum SDGs are due to be completed in 2030, with negotiations towards a follow-up agenda to begin formally at the UN General Assembly in autumn 2027. Many direct or indirect discussions have, however, already begun, e.g. pluri-laterally at BRICS and G20 meetings and the EU; as well as at the UN in connection with the Summit of the Future, the Doha World Summit for Social Development, the Beyond GDP report; or in fora such as the Hamburg Sustainability Conference. Think tanks and academics, too, are brainstorming on how best to re-ignite a genuine commitment to the SDGs and at the same time reflect on the future.

The United Nations General Assembly’s proclamation of the Fourth Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA IV) is far more than a symbolic milestone.
VIENNA / ADDIS ABABA, Jul 6 2026 (IPS) - Amid shifting geopolitical, economic, and technological landscapes, it reflects growing international recognition that Africa’s sustainable industrial transformation is vital – not only for the continent’s future, but also for global prosperity.
Backed by more than 140 co-sponsors and endorsed by 176 Member States, as well as the African Union Executive Council, IDDA IV is the most politically anchored Decade yet. This is especially significant at a time when international development cooperation and multilateralism are under strain.
