The 2018 Farm Bill, explained

A few hours ago, President Trump signed into law one of his biggest priorities for 2018: a Farm Bill that will keep American agriculture and farmers on top globally.

For the first time since 1990, a farm bill has been enacted in the same year it was introduced before Congress. The 2018 bill provides crucial funding for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as well as support, certainty, and stability for America’s farmers. Specifically, the new law:

Extends farm support programs and improves crop insurance
Opens new markets for American farmers
Maintains vital disaster programs
Promotes voluntary conservation

The 2018 Farm Bill, which also expands rural broadband access and dedicates resources to fighting the opioid crisis, is just the latest in President Trump’s mission to put rural communities back on track. Saturday will mark the one-year anniversary of the President’s historic Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, for example, which expanded the estate tax exemption that is so crucial to family farms across America.

Of course, nothing is perfect. Although the Farm Bill enhanced Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program integrity, it missed an opportunity to close loopholes that trap Americans in poverty. To help fix that, the Administration is proposing a new rule with commonsense measures to move SNAP recipients toward self-sufficiency through meaningful work whenever possible.

Big news on border security

Aliens trying to enter the United States to claim asylum will no longer be released into our country, where they often disappear before an immigration judge can determine their claim’s merits.

Instead, these individuals will be processed by the Department of Homeland Security and given a “Notice to Appear” date. The Mexican government has made its own determination to provide humanitarian visas, work authorization, and other protections while these aliens await their hearing in a U.S. immigration court. They will also have access to immigration attorneys.

Those whose claims are upheld by U.S. judges will be allowed to enter the United States. Those without valid claims will be deported to their home countries.
