The share of the global population living in extreme poverty in 2024 is revised upwards slightly from 10.3 percent to 10.4 percent. The update involves three changes to the PIP data (see the What’s New document for more details): First, the update brings new survey data for a total of 28 country-years, including new data for Pakistan, which ensures regional coverage for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan region in recent years; second, existing data is improved for several country-years; and third, it incorporates an updated approach to improve the precision of data used from the Luxembourg Income Study Database for several advanced economies.

There are also broader benefits to sending countries through remittances, knowledge transfers, trade facilitation, and many other channels. Yet despite this promise, in two decades at the World Bank, I’ve only managed to work on one successful operational project that let more people benefit from such opportunities – work on developing and evaluating a seasonal migration program from the Pacific Islands to New Zealand. In Ghana, the Rori math tutor, delivered by text message on basic cell phones, produced nearly a full year of learning gains in mathematics at US$5 per student. In Bangladesh, AI-supported medical imaging increased the number of patients screened for diabetic retinopathy by 39.5 percent per day.

Evidence from the World Health Organization and global monitoring initiatives such as IQAir shows that rapid urban growth has pushed ambient concentrations of fine particulates (PM₂.₅), ozone (O₃), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and carbon monoxide (CO) well beyond recommended guidelines in many regions (WHO 2021; IQAir 2025; Health Effects Institute 2024). Recent global assessments attribute 8.1 million premature deaths and 120 million disability-adjusted life years to air pollution, and approximately US$8.1 trillion in annual economic losses to PM₂.₅ exposure alone (Health Effects Institute 2024; Feng et al. 2025; World Bank 2022). Yet sparse monitoring systems in many countries limit accurate pollution exposure assessment and policy evaluation, highlighting the need for consistent, high-resolution air quality data.

This is social-emotional learning (SEL) in action — not an abstract concept buried in a policy document, but a living practice woven into an ordinary school day. Teachers had long been practicing SEL without necessarily calling it by name; training helped them recognize and apply these practices with greater intention. More serious than this latest decline is that the region is not escaping a low-quality trap, and is slowly sinking deeper into it: our 15-year-olds in Latin America are far from where they should be, more than half do not reach the minimum reading level expected for their age, and 3 out of 4 do not reach the minimum expected level of mathematical reasoning. That long-term stagnation in foundational learning undermines the prospects for sustained growth in the region's productivity, competitiveness and well-being.

The request for a 3-year extension was endorsed by the ECOSOC following the recommendation of the UN’s Committee for Development Policy (CDP). It is highly likely that the extension will also be justifiably granted to Nepal and Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao, PDR) – the two other countries scheduled to graduate with Bangladesh, given the fast deteriorating global economic situation and recent natural disaster in Nepal. It was a landmark achievement for international cooperation and a reminder that, even in an increasingly divided world, nations can still come together in defence of the common good. But celebration must not be confused with protection. A treaty on paper will not restore depleted marine life. It will not prevent harmful activity and it will not ensure that the benefits of ocean science are shared fairly. When African Smallholders Access Finance, They’ll Show You What’s Possible By Agnes Kalibata NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 24 2026 (IPS) - I was born in Rwanda, but my family soon became refugees in Uganda during the conflict and unrest on the cusp of independence. My father was a teacher and went to great lengths to make sure I was well educated. My parents were also smallholder farmers, and I saw firsthand the challenges my parents and other refugee families faced. After I received my doctoral degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, I returned to a new Rwanda in 2005, managing a World Bank agriculture project with the government. In 2008, I became Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, and over the next six years, I oversaw the country’s transition from food deficit to food security, as Rwanda cut its global hunger index by more than 50 percent. NEW YORK, Sep 24 2026 (IPS) - Among the three of us, we have 15 decades of high-level experience in climate science, policies and actions, and we have never been more alarmed than we are at this moment. The United Nations has just officially declared that the world has failed in limiting global warming to a safe level. During the last decade, heat-trapping pollutants nearly doubled the rate that heat is being added to the planet—a rate that will push temperatures across the 1.5°Celsius threshold in five years or less and breach the first barrier of the Paris Agreement. This will further destabilize natural climate systems and amplify weather extremes, which are already costing the world economy more than $ 2 trillion annually. Telenor sold its Myanmar subsidiary in March 2022, in the wake of the military coup that ousted the country’s democratically elected government in February 2021. An August 2025 Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation investigation reported that ahead of its exit, Telenor had complied with military requests to hand over customer data.
