"el dispreciau" don't let them win

Dear el dispreciau,

The next 24 hours are crucial in tackling the deadly trade in conflict minerals.

Today and tomorrow two key political groups in the European Parliament (EPP and ALDE) are meeting to decide their position on the proposed conflict minerals law before they vote next week.

Influential members of these groups say the weak proposal that’s currently on the table goes far enough. They’re spreading this message far and wide, including on social media. We can’t let them get away with this. Many other members of these groups are still undecided about how to vote: unless we persuade them otherwise, they could end up voting for an ineffective conflict minerals law.

A couple of weeks ago Walk Free supporters took to Twitter on this campaign and we created such a buzz that our partners have told us the most important way we can try to influence this proposal is on social media: that's why we’re asking for your support in this way again.

If you’re on Twitter: please send a message in your own words to Alain Lamassoure MEP, an influential member of the EPP group, calling on him to vote for tough action, remembering to include the handle @ALamassoure and #ConflictMinerals. If you’re in a rush, you can copy and paste the example tweet below (and if you’re really in a rush, you can re-tweet our message here)!

Example tweet: .@ALamassoure 40k+ demand strong #conflictminerals law http://walkfr.ee/1BYOR6w The time has come for action

If you’re not on Twitter: please send Alain Lamassoure an email (his address is alain.lamassoure@europarl.europa.eu). Your message will have more impact if you use your own words, but also feel free to copy and paste the suggested message at the end of this email.

Thanks in advance for your support,

Jayde, Zoe, Sarah, Olly and the Walk Free team

P.S. There is all to play for ahead of the vote in the European Parliament next week -- this a critical time to tackle the deadly trade in conflict minerals. We’ll be back in touch to keep you updated and to share more actions we can take to keep the pressure up.

P.P.S. Here is the suggested text for your email to Alain Lamassoure:

Dear Alain Lamassoure MEP,

I call on the European Parliament to show leadership in tackling the deadly trade in conflict minerals. I'm concerned that the proposed scheme does not go far enough to ensure minerals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas are sourced responsibly and not in extreme conditions of exploitation, violence and modern slavery.

I’m calling on you to support a stronger law and vote for legislation that:
* Introduces legal requirements for companies to identify and address the risk of conflict minerals in their supply chains.
* Ensures these rules cover companies bringing minerals into the EU, whether as a raw material or as part of finished products.
