Why is it taking so long? | Joanna Ewart-James, Freedom United

The question Nadia Murad wanted the UN Security Council to answer was “Why is it taking so long?”. She said “I cannot understand why you are letting ISIS get away with it, or what more you need to hear before you will act. So today, I ask the Iraqi government and the UN to establish an investigation and give all the victims of ISIS the justice they deserve.”[1]

Will you join Nadia and ask the Security Council to take immediate action to hold ISIS to justice for their actions in Iraq?

When Nadia’s lawyer, Amal Clooney visited the Security Council with her back in March, she also expressed her exasperation that victims were having to wait so long to seek the justice that they deserve.[2]

The delay has been caused by the Security Council waiting for Iraq to confirm its cooperation with an investigation.

It’s now been several months, tell members of the Security Council that victims of slavery cannot wait any longer!

Without Iraq’s cooperation, there are other options to move forward — the case could be referred to the International Criminal Court.

We have collected over 160,000 signatures since we launched this campaign three years ago and so we share Nadia’s and Amal’s frustration. Even in the months since their visit, there have been no signs of progress. It is time to move forward.

Can you help strengthen our voice?

In solidarity,

Joanna, Zoe, Miriam and the Freedom United team
