Phoebe's story

Dear "el dispreciau",
The last place you should expect to find a child is in a brothel; yet for 17-year-old Phoebe1 from Kenya, this is her life.
Phoebe comes from a poor family. When she dropped out of school her friends told her she could make a living as a sex worker. She thought she could start a new life and find a rich, foreign boyfriend -- instead she has been forced to have group sex with tourists for no money.2 No child should be forced into the commercial sex industry for survival. Yet travelling sex offenders come to Kenya for this very reason: to prey on these vulnerable victims.3
Walk Free and Child Aid Kenya are calling on the Kenyan government to take urgent action to protect Phoebe and other Kenyan children from sexual exploitation. Will you join us?
Stand with the people of Kenya to condemn commercial sexual exploitation of their children: urge the Kenyan government to take urgent steps to end this abuse.
Many governments around the world have a database of sex offenders so their movements can be closely monitored. As it stands, there are no such measures in Kenya and many tourists come to Kenya with the belief that sex with children is culturally and legally acceptable.4
However, there is reason to believe that we can change this. In a recent meeting with Child Aid Kenya, Hon. Phyllis Kandie, KenyanCabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism indicated her commitment to address the problem.
If enough of us speak out now, we can show the Kenyan government that there is global support to tackle this problem. This is a crucial time as the number of tourists increases over the busy summer period, potentially putting more children at risk of abuse.
Call on the Kenyan Ministry of Tourism to declare zero tolerance for the commercial sexual exploitation of children.
Thank you in advance for your support,
Sonia, Joanna, Jayde, Tom and the entire teams at Walk Free and Child Aid Organization Kenya
