TONIGHT: President Trump honors African American History Month

This evening, President Trump will speak at a White House reception honoring African American History Month—a celebration that coincides this year with the 150th anniversary of the 15th Amendment.

The 15th Amendment gave African-American men the right to vote. Ratified in 1870, it prohibits the government from denying or abridging suffrage based on “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”

African Americans have enhanced—and advanced—every aspect of American life. “Their fight for equality, representation, and respect motivates us to continue working for a more promising, peaceful, and hopeful future for every American,” President Trump wrote in his 2020 National African American History Month Proclamation.

Great strides are being made today to expand the American Dream for every citizen, no matter their race or background. The blue-collar, working-class economic boom under President Trump is lifting communities that Washington neglected for too long:
  • The African-American unemployment rate hit an all-time low in 2019.

  • African-American poverty has fallen to the lowest rate ever recorded.

  • Historic criminal justice reform, signed by President Trump, reformed Clinton-era sentencing laws that disproportionately harmed African Americans. Now, Second Chance Hiring is giving these citizens a path to rewarding careers.
Patriotism means fighting for every American. “Our great Nation is strengthened and enriched by citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed,” President Trump says.

Video of the day: First Lady visits school in New Delhi

While visiting India with President Trump earlier this week, First Lady Melania Trump dropped by a local school that teaches a “happiness curriculum” to its young students. That mission is close to the First Lady’s heart—her Be Best initiative focuses on helping children in all aspects of their social, emotional, and physical well-being.

“Unforgettable afternoon at the Sarvodaya School in New Delhi! It was an honor to be surrounded by extraordinary students and faculty. Thank you for the warm welcome! #BeBest,” she wrote on Twitter.
