Food Security Update (+++++)...

Global food markets remain broadly stable, with adequate food supplies. Since the last update in September, the aggregate agriculture price index closed 1 percent lower, and the cereal price index closed 6 percent lower. Although global supply projections remain comfortable, agricultural commodity prices are higher than at the same time last year, and high transport costs and continued logistical disruptions are contributing to market uncertainty.

AMIS Market Monitor - No. 143 November 2026
Markets for AMIS commodities remain relatively well supplied, although weather and policy uncertainty continue to cloud the outlook. International wheat, maize and soybean prices declined in October, while rice prices rose. Crop conditions remain favourable across producing regions, but strengthening El Niño conditions are increasing weather risks as the 2026/27 season progresses. As this month’s feature illustrates, the consequences of production shocks depend on how trade and policies respond: open trade can help redistribute supplies, while export restrictions can amplify disruptions. Fertilizer prices were stable in October, supported by easing urea quotations, but phosphate supplies remain tight and affordability varies across countries. Logistical constraints, including in the Black Sea, remain an additional source of market uncertainty.

FEWS NET Special Reports provide in-depth analysis of food security issues of particular concern. During 2026-2027, FEWS NET will publish a series of El Niño Special Reports focused on FEWS NET monitored countries and where El Niño-related impacts are of concern. This first report provides an overview of the El Niño event, highlights the distinction between the timing of rainfall impacts and the peak impacts on acute food insecurity outcomes, and summarizes anticipated effects at the regional level. It also examines global implications for food availability and prices, as well as longer-term food security risks. A second report will be published in late 2026, followed by a third and final report in early to mid-2027. These reports will provide more detailed early warning for regions where the effects of El Niño on food security are expected to emerge or intensify later in 2027. They will also include updates on evolving conditions and the potential transition from El Niño to La Niña.
