Economic Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa Gains Momentum Despite Global Uncertainty Building the foundations for an AI-ready economy can contribute to turning Africa’s growth into more jobs and better opportunities for the region's rapidly growing labor force WASHINGTON, October 6, 2026 — Sub-Saharan Africa’s economy remains resilient despite geopolitical tensions, climate shocks, declining development assistance, and fiscal pressures. Growth in the region is projected to rise from 4.1% in 2025 to 4.3% in 2026, 0.3 percentage points above the April 2026 forecast, according to the latest edition of the Africa Economic Update, the World Bank Group’s biannual economic report for the region. https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/press-release/2026/10/06/economic-growth-in-sub-saharan-africa-gains-momentum-despite-global-uncertainty Africa Economic Update, October 2026: Building AI-Readiness https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/entities/publication/b852f762-7a0c-46a8-a162-8bb9aad6f7ac Economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa held up in 2026 despite heightened geopolitical tensions and a range of regional and domestic headwinds. Growth is projected to increase from 4.1 percent in 2025 to 4.3 percent in 2026, supported by robust global trade and sustained external demand. However, mounting debt service burdens, limited fiscal space, higher energy and transport costs, and heightened uncertainty continue to weigh on the outlook. At the same time, artificial intelligence offers opportunities for productivity and job creation, but adoption remains uneven. Limited connectivity constrains workers' ability to benefit from AI augmentation, while public sector adoption remains basic in many countries. Strengthening the enablers for AI adoption will be important for realizing productivity gains, improving efficiency, and broadening the benefits from AI. Building AI Readiness https://www.worldbank.org/en/region/afr/publication/africa-economic-update Sub-Saharan Africa’s economic growth is gaining momentum despite heightened global uncertainty and regional and domestic headwinds, with growth forecasts upgraded for nearly three-quarters of countries in the region. Yet growth remains insufficient to substantially reduce poverty or create enough jobs for the region’s rapidly growing labor force. In this context, the Africa Economic Update examines how artificial intelligence can help boost productivity, expand economic opportunities, and improve service delivery. The report argues that Africa’s greatest near-term opportunity lies in adopting and adapting practical AI solutions while strengthening the foundations needed to use them effectively—including reliable electricity, connectivity, skills, data, computing infrastructure, and strong institutions and governance. Building these foundations can help countries translate AI adoption into broader development gains and better opportunities for people across the region.
