https://openknowledge.fao.org/items/e410f542-717a-4596-9fe4-9a3a546a4aec International wheat prices decreased in June 2026 as activities advanced across the Northern Hemisphere, whilemaize prices also declined on ample export supplies, with lower crude oil prices providing only limited support. By contrast, international rice prices increased, driven firmer Asian demand for Indica rice, weather-related production concerns and elevated input costs. In the domestic markets monitored by FAO, staple food prices remained under upward pressure in May and June 2026, partly reflecting volatile energy prices. Across several countries, governments continued to refine and strengthen policy measures aimed at mitigating broader inflationary pressures. The high likelihood of El Niño‑induced drier‑than‑average weather conditions could adversely affect production prospects in Southern Africa and parts of Far East Asia, potentially placing additional upward pressure on domestic food prices. Meanwhile, protracted conflicts and insecurity continue to disrupt market functioning and severely constrain food access in Haiti, South Sudan and the Sudan.
