Afro-Brazilian Religious Communities Face Mounting Discrimination Amid the Climate Crisis By Carla Ruas BELÉM, Brazil, Oct 19 2026 (IPS) - In 2024, as floodwaters approached Lutalo Canti’s home in Porto Alegre, Brazil, he lifted some furniture off the floor and left in a hurry. Extreme rainfall in the country’s southern region had caused local rivers to overflow. The flooding would eventually reach more than 400 municipalities and impact over 2 million people. When waters finally receded, Canti, 61, was shocked to see the damage to his house, which also served as a terreiro—a sacred space for the practice of Afro-Brazilian religions. https://www.ipsnews.net/2026/10/afro-brazilian-religious-communities-face-mounting-discrimination-amid-the-climate-crisis/ Copyright © 2026 IPS-Inter Press Service.
