James Talarico slammed his U.S. Senate opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton, for voting multiple times using an address where he appeared to no longer live, The Texas Tribune and ProPublica found Talarico voted in five elections using his parents’ address after purchasing a home for himself nearby. That may have violated state voting laws. Talarico’s campaign declined to answer questions about his residency and voting history, including when he began living in the home he owns. His campaign noted that “right-wing actors” had made “credible threats” about trying to locate Talarico and his family. When asked about the apparent discrepancy in Talarico’s voter registration and residency, a campaign spokesperson said, “This is a lame attempt by Ken Paxton to deflect from his own hypocrisy and career of corruption.” Today’s investigation comes after we reported last month that Paxton may have violated state election law. Here’s a timeline of our reporting — and the back-and-forth that followed: July 7: ProPublica and The Texas Tribune revealed that Paxton appeared to have used an address where he no longer lived to vote in six elections in the past two years. Three election lawyers told us he may have violated state law. Paxton, who has advocated for strict enforcement of Texas voting laws, has repeatedly declined to answer our questions about his voter registration and residency. A spokesperson for his campaign said Paxton has been “a national leader on election integrity, with a long record of defending Texas elections” and added that “attempting to insinuate otherwise and tear him down with a baseless, lie-filled tabloid story is not real reporting.” July 16: We reported that Dallas-area Democrats filed a complaint demanding that Paxton be investigated for illegal voting. It’s unclear what will come of the complaint. Neither Paxton nor the attorney general’s office responded to questions about it. July 24: We reported that Talarico, Paxton’s Democratic challenger in the race for a U.S. Senate seat, alleged that Paxton is guilty of the type of voter fraud the attorney general has spent years trying to eliminate. Paxton’s office and campaign did not answer questions about Talarico’s comments.
