NEW: President Trump designates Wilmington, NC as first World War II Heritage City

President Trump visited North Carolina today, where he recognized Wilmington as the first American World War II Heritage City. Today marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the war, when Japan formally delivered its surrender to the United States.

“There is no better place to mark this profound World War II anniversary,” the President said. During the war, nearly 2 million Americans trained for service in North Carolina. More than 360,000 North Carolinians would fight in the war, and over 11,000 of these patriots made the ultimate sacrifice for their Nation.

In March of 2019, President Trump signed legislation directing the Interior Secretary to designate one U.S. city each year as an official World War II Heritage City.

Battleship U.S.S. North Carolina served as the backdrop for today’s announcement. During the war, the Wilmington-based North Carolina Shipbuilding Company built 243 ships in total for the U.S. Navy.

World War II veterans joined the President and Interior Secretary David Bernhardt for today’s event. “These brave Americans raced into the fires of hell to vanquish tyranny, dethrone fascism, and defend the American way of life,” President Trump said.

“In America, we don’t tear down the past. We celebrate our heroes, we cherish our heritage, we preserve our history—and we build the future.”

Ivanka Trump talks STEM education in Michigan

Today, Ivanka Trump joined General Motors CEO Mary Barra to tour GM’s Technical Learning University (TLU) in Warren, Michigan.

TLU trains employees while they work to earn paychecks at the same time. The program has trained 300 employees since 2017, and GM officials expect that number to reach 3,600 by 2023.

President Trump is committed to investing in America’s most important economic resource: our workers. Through his Pledge to America’s Workers, hundreds of companies are training our citizens for the high-paying jobs of the future. GM signed the Pledge with an initial commitment of 11,000 training opportunities. A year later, they upped it to 46,000.

More than 10,00,000 masks have been produced at the GM facility to help keep Americans safe during the global Coronavirus pandemic, and the company has nearly finished its contract to deliver 30,000 ventilators at President Trump’s request.
