Watch: The first sitting American President to set foot in North Korea

In a moment for the history books, President Donald J. Trump visited the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Sunday and met with North Korean Chairman Kim Jong Un. The two shook hands, and moments later President Trump became the first sitting commander-in-chief to ever set foot on the other side of North Korea’s border.

“Stepping across that line was a great honor,” the President said, standing with Chairman Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in. “It’s a great day, really, for the world.”

After their initial greeting, President Trump and Chairman Kim entered the Panmunjom “truce village” in the DMZ and sat down to revisit negotiations. The two discussed a number of issues, including progress toward President Trump’s goal of full denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

“The two leaders have just presented such a big hope to the 80,000 Korean people as well as to the whole world,” South Korean President Moon said.

North Korea has confounded American Presidents for decades, as administration after administration stuck to the traditional Washington foreign policy playbook. Meanwhile, tensions escalated while Pyongyang marched ever-closer to developing lethal long-range weapons.

President Trump is breaking that dangerous cycle with bold, creative diplomacy—negotiating for peace while backing up his words with a rebuilt, reinvigorated U.S. military.

“Remember that it wasn’t too long after President Barack Obama left office that his national security adviser, Susan Rice, wrote in an op-ed published by The New York Times: ‘History shows that we can, if we must, tolerate nuclear weapons in North Korea – the same way we tolerated the far greater threat of thousands of Soviet nuclear weapons during the Cold War,’” Richard Manning reminds readers in Fox News.

“With that comment, Rice provided a window into the Obama policy perspective toward North Korea, which led to eight years of ignoring and in many respects enabling the threat posed by the communist regime.”

Today, America and the world have a clearer path toward peace than ever before.
