I often get labelled a
'vocal' clean air campaigner, as if I should be ashamed of speaking out on the issue. I'm not and I never will be.
The government, however, certainly should be ashamed. Their repeatedly inadequate responses to the air quality crisis—which is linked with 50,000 deaths a year in the UK—have been widely, and rightly, condemned.
The latest consultation—which closes at 22:00 on Tuesday 14 August—is the product of repeated successful domestic legal challenges and EU action taken against the UK for its consistent breaching of EU air pollution limits.
The courts found previous proposals were 'inadequate' and fell far short of bringing UK air pollution levels within EU limits.
Little has changed in these latest proposals, sadly. The government is still apathetic in the face of a toxic crisis.
But, by responding to the consultation, we can make our voices heard.
Together, we must call on the government to finally take the urgent action necessary to clean up the air we breathe.I am providing
my consultation response as many of my constituents have contacted me looking for guidance on how to complete their own responses.
If you find it useful, please do use it to guide your own submissions.
