Germany's 1939 invasion of Poland sent the world into the largest conflict in history. World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945. Commemorations of 80 years since the Allied victory in Europe are held on May 8 and 9.

Eighty years ago the Second World War ended in Europe. In Germany, solemn commemorations were overshadowed by a new war. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier rejected Russian claims that its war against Ukraine was a continuation of its fight against fascism.

What East African soldiers contributed during World War II

The King's African Rifles were a division of African soldiers in the British army during World War II. Toward the end of the war, East African soldiers fought Italians in Africa and Japanese in what was then Burma. DW spoke to one of the few remaining veterans in Kenya.
