More than 2.1 million Americans filed for unemployment last week, total job losses from coronavirus lockdown approach 40 million

More than 2.1 million laid-off workers applied for unemployment last week, the Labor Department reported on Thursday, as the coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing economic lockdown continued to wreak havoc on the U.S. job market.

The new report, which covers the week ending May 23, pushes the 10-week total of job losses--since states directed residents to stay at home and forced nonessential businesses to close--to 40 million, a rate of unemployment unseen since the Great Depression.

President Trump on Thursday marked the “sad milestone” of the U.S. passing 100,000 coronavirus-related deaths by sending “sympathy & love” to those who have lost friends and family members.

The six feet of social distance recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to limit the transmission of COVID-19 may not be enough, some experts say in a new article. In a perspective article published in the journal Science, three experts wrote that aerosol particles can accumulate and remain infectious in indoor air for hours, while being easily inhaled deep into the lungs.

More than 80 percent of passengers and crew members on a cruise ship who contracted COVID-19 were asymptomatic, a new study has revealed. The research, published in the scientific journal Thorax, notes that 128 of 217 passengers and crew members tested positive for the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. Of those, 81 percent did not show symptoms, leading researchers to conclude "the prevalence of COVID-19 on affected cruise ships is likely to be significantly underestimated."

And in California, theme parks can welcome visitors once again during Stage 3 of the state’s four-stage reopening plan, officials have announced.
