Water sustains lives and livelihoods, enables food producƟon, drives economies and industry, and supports ecosystems. However, economic growth in many regions is already sƟfled by too much, too liƩle or too polluted water. Over 2.1 billion people lack safely managed drinking water, and more than 3.4 billion live without adequate sanitaƟon (JMP, 2025). In addiƟon, 4 billion people experience water scarcity every year, with several billion vulnerable to floods and droughts – and with impacts falling disproporƟonally on women and the poor. Moreover, water security is part of the foundational infrastructure for growth and jobs. Key water-dependent economic sectors provide 1.7 billion jobs worldwide.
