WASHINGTON DC, Mar 20 2026 (IPS) - In many high-income countries, even a small number of tuberculosis (TB) diagnoses can generate headlines and prompt a rapid public health response. Recent situations in U.S. cities such as Seattle and San Francisco illustrate this, where media coverage has focused on the number of children being tested after TB disease was identified in a school.

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 20 2026 (IPS) - The past two weeks have marked a significantly violent escalation in the Sudanese Civil War, with drone strikes and artillery shelling between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) causing widespread destruction, casualties, and displacement. With humanitarian responses critically underfunded and the scale of needs, including the hunger crisis, continuing to grow, experts warn that millions in Sudan could be affected by famine, violence, or prolonged displacement.

BARCELONA, Spain, Mar 20 2026 (IPS) - “Europe can no longer be a custodian for the old-world order, for a world that has gone and will not return (…) we need a more realistic and interest-driven foreign policy.” These were some of the words pronounced one week ago by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the EU Ambassadors’ Conference in Brussels. A speech that sparked considerable controversy: an almost immediate rebuttal from the President of the Council, Antonio Costa; rumours of a motion of censure against Von der Leyen in the European Parliament; more or less public reproaches from several European leaders; and a swift and complete retraction by the President herself.

LONDON, Mar 16 2026 (IPS) - Once again, global oil prices are spiking, driven by the Israeli-US war against Iran. With Iran retaliating by attacking infrastructure and transport hubs and blocking the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, oil supplies from the region are being choked, pushing up prices. The cost of a barrel of Brent crude – the international benchmark for oil prices – stood at US$73 before the conflict but has surged beyond US$100 since. It could go higher still as war continues.

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Mar 20 2026 (IPS) - When German Chancellor Friedrich Merz opened the 62nd Munich Security Conference by declaring that the post-war rules-based order ‘no longer exists’, there was plenty of evidence to back his claim. Israel is committing genocide in Gaza in defiance of international law, Russia is four years into its illegal invasion of Ukraine, the last nuclear arms control treaty between Russia and the USA has just expired and the USA has withdrawn from 66 international bodies and commitments. Since the conference, Israel and the USA have launched another war on Iran, threatening to spark a broader regional conflict. Meanwhile the UN is undergoing a funding crisis, cutting staff and programmes, and civil society organisations that relied on US Agency for International Development funding are facing closure.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, India, Mar 20 2026 (IPS) - Sudhi Kumar animatedly moves his hands, resembling a graceful dance performance, as he demonstrates how a fishing harpoon is used. He has been on a brief hiatus from harpooning, owing to the recent rough nature of the sea, and doesn’t have the tool with him as we speak. But more than three decades of experience using harpoons is apparent in how vividly he uses his body to mimic the process.

Escalation trap visible in Gulf conflict By Robert A. Pape | CHINA DAILY | Updated: 2026-03-19 07:45
https://www.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202603/19/WS69bb3920a310d6866eb3e913.html
Modern wars rarely begin with leaders intending to fight long, costly conflicts. More often they begin with limited objectives and confidence that escalation can be controlled. But history shows that actions meant to force an opponent to back down instead trigger retaliation that widens the conflict. What begins as a limited campaign gradually expands in scope, geography and stakes. I call this dynamic the escalation trap — a situation in which each side's attempt to gain advantage pushes both deeper into a conflict neither originally sought.

Over the past decade, the economic relationship between China and Central Asia has shifted from transactional trade to deep strategic investment. China's foreign direct investment in the region is not merely growing in size but transforming regional economies, creating new value chains and laying the foundation for mutually beneficial long-term cooperation. Data show that China has emerged not only as a dominant economic partner for Central Asian nations, but also as a source of stable capital during a period of global retreat in FDI flows.

Leave peace aside: Israel needs security on the Lebanon border, not another diplomatic illusion
Opinion: As France pushes a plan for Israel-Lebanon peace talks, the real issue remains Hezbollah; Lebanon cannot stop rockets or drones from crossing the border, and any diplomatic process that ignores that reality risks strengthening the terror group

Many of the world’s poor are farmers. But all too often, crops that once blossomed on the verdant fields of small, rain-fed family farms now thirst for water from drought and soaring heat.
More—and better managed—climate-resilient irrigation will help feed the planet with available water, strengthen livelihoods, grow economies and create jobs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and build resilience to climate shocks.

Strengthening the institutions behind the infrastructure
In the world’s most vulnerable communities, water is more than a basic need—it’s a driver of health, an enabler of resilience and a test of equity. Yet in many rural areas, access to safe water and sanitation remains out of reach, holding back families, economies, and entire generations.

Over the past eight years, the Global Water Security and Sanitation Partnership (GWSP) has built a robust framework for advancing water management through extensive knowledge development, data, and implementation tools. By facilitating policy dialogues and enhancing the capacity of water-related institutions, GWSP influences how governments, businesses, and communities use, manage, and conserve water.

WATER STRATEGY
IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
Mission Water for a
Water Secure Future
Water is the foundaƟon of a livable planet. Water sustains lives and livelihoods, enables food producƟon, drives
economies and industry, and supports ecosystems. However, economic growth in many regions is already sƟfled by
too much, too liƩle or too polluted water. Over 2.1 billion people lack safely managed drinking water, and more than
3.4 billion live without adequate sanitaƟon (JMP, 2025). In addiƟon, 4 billion people experience water scarcity every
year, with several billion vulnerable to floods and droughts – and with impacts falling disproporƟonally on women and
the poor.
Moreover, water security is part of the foundational infrastructure for growth and jobs. Key water-dependent
economic sectors provide 1.7 billion jobs worldwide. Water is critical to (1) creating jobs through the design,
construction, operations, and maintenance of water-related infrastructure; (2) enabling jobs by boosting the
productivity of the workforce; and (3) protecting jobs by preventing diseases and mitigating the impacts of floods
and droughts.
With the aim of scaling up and replicaƟng proven soluƟons to address water security and aligned with the Fast Track
Water Security and Climate AdaptaƟon Global Challenge Program (GCP), the World Bank Group (WBG) developed a
new Water Sector Strategy, which was discussed with the ExecuƟve Directors in July 2024, and which outlined three
core pillars to build a water-secure world – Water for People, Water for Food, and Water for Planet0F
