What is the European Union’s CBAM, and why has BRICS condemned and rejected it?
Europe’s carbon border tax is an import duty on a product manufactured in a country that has more lax climate rules than the EU. The ostensible purpose is to check ‘carbon leakage’, but the tax makes items like steel or cement manufactured in countries like India more expensive, and thus less competitive, in European markets.

Measures of agency and empowerment are often operationalized through questions regarding decision-making. Survey items may ask respondents whether they participate in, influence, or have the final say in household decisions. This approach focuses on the involvement in the decision regardless of whether the desired outcome is achieved. Yet, this standard approach to measuring agency may miss three key elements:...

When companies face financial trouble, potential job losses can be a major risk for people and—depending on the size of the company or industry in trouble—a risk to local or national economies. An efficient insolvency system can mitigate this risk while contributing to the creation of more and better jobs. As jobs are the most critical tool in fighting poverty, a better understanding of the effects of insolvency law on employment is vital for development work.

Food insecurity in West Africa is at a critical juncture, with over 34.4 million people facing a severe food crisis. Agriculture and livestock, which contribute 40% of the region’s GDP, are under threat from three major shocks. First, rising conflict and insecurity have displaced over 12 million people, putting strain on emergency food systems. In addition, economic disruptions such as high inflation (up to 50%), trade barriers, and rising agricultural input costs are crippling livelihoods. Lastly, extreme weather events are having a devastating effect, with erratic rainfall and droughts impacting the 80% of the population living in arid or semi-arid areas.

The World Bank Group assigns the world’s economies[1] to four income groups: low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high. The classifications are updated each year on July 1, based on the GNI per capita of the previous calendar year. GNI measures are expressed in United States dollars[2] using conversion factors derived according to the Atlas method, which in its current form was introduced in 1989[3]. The World Bank’s income classification aims to reflect a country’s level of development, drawing on Atlas GNI per capita as a broadly available indicator of economic capacity.
