Negotiations between Iran and the United States are progressing in Oman; a nuclear Tlatelolco Treaty for the Middle East?
by Alfredo Jalife-Rahme
Peace negotiations between the United States and Iran, facilitated by Russia, have resulted in a dramatic turn of events. Washington could support the creation of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, following the proposal presented by Iran in 2010 to the United Nations. This proposal itself echoed an idea put forward by Alfonso García Robles and Alfredo Jalife-Rahme in 1985.
However, today, Iran does not have a military nuclear program, while Israel already has numerous atomic bombs.

Donald Trump’s Projects (2/2)
by Thierry Meyssan
President Donald Trump’s core objective is to reform the Western economy by putting an end to "American globalization," according to which the components of complex products must be manufactured in multiple countries before being assembled. He intends to repatriate as many factories as possible to his country so that it becomes capable of manufacturing complex objects from A to Z.
Contrary to what we might think, the First World Trade War does not pit Washington against Beijing, but rather between two forms of capitalism.

The Stakes of Donald Trump’s Negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran
by Thierry Meyssan
The general public is completely unaware of the real stakes in the negotiations between Washington and Tehran. This article presents a situation in which lies have been piling up over three decades, making any progress particularly difficult. Contrary to popular belief, the nuclear issue in Iran is not whether Tehran will acquire an atomic bomb, but whether it will be able to help Palestine without resorting to weapons.

He was combative in victory last night but is better known for his charm. “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us, that will never, ever happen,” he said in his victory speech. “We are over the shock of the American betrayal, we have to take care of each other.” But during his time as a central banker he was best-known as a smooth diplomatic operator who could forge relationships with anyone he needed to. In the long run, this is the version of Carney—not the fighter—that is likely to characterize his premiership.

SRINAGAR, Apr 25 2025 (IPS) - Abdul Majeed Mir strolls leisurely among the purple crocus flower rows in Pampore’s saffron fields as the morning mist hovers low over them. His family has been growing this valuable spice, called “red gold,” for many generations, but now his hands go through the harvest mechanically. There is a noticeable lack of the typical commotion of tourists haggling over saffron packets.

Reform UK candidates have ‘posted hate, pushed far-right conspiracies and praised extremists’, investigation finds ++

Ahead of the local elections due to take place next week, which are seen as a key litmus test for Reform UK, a number of the far-right party’s candidates have been found once again to have posted hateful and extremist content online.
Even as party leader Nigel Farage insists that they are taking the vetting of candidates seriously, an investigation by anti-extremist group Hope not Hate ahead of the upcoming local elections has found candidates who have called for ‘one big nuke bomb’ to remove Islam from the world, as well as others who have promoted the conspiracy theory that Muslims are seeking to “supplant the native population” in the UK.
That Reform is comfortable with fielding such candidates speaks volumes about the kinds of values it holds.
Read more on Hope not Hate’s investigation here.
On the topic of Reform, the party is also proudly soliciting donations from oil and gas executives.
The Financial Times has revealed that Nigel Farage’s party is seeking to secure donations from the fossil fuel industry. The paper also reports that Reform is ‘launching a drive to raise funds from wealthy offshore donors in low-tax jurisdictions including Monaco, the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland, taking advantage of Britain’s loose funding rules to bolster its coffers’.
So much for being an anti-establishment party, Reform will be funded by rich oil and gas donors. Rather than being a party for the people, it’s a party for corporate interests.

Tories predicted to lose 500 seats in humiliating local election wipeout for Kemi Badenoch ++ Copyright © 2025 Left Foot Forward
https://leftfootforward.org/2025/04/tories-predicted-to-lose-500-seats-in-humiliating-local-election-wipeout-for-kemi-badenoch/?utm_source=Left+Foot+Forward+Newsletter&utm_campaign=e6b71aca53-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2025_04_24_12_35&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-e6b71aca53-78411619&mc_cid=e6b71aca53&mc_eid=974ea6f898
Another local election poll has the Tories set to lose big next week. Tory pollster and peer Lord Robert Hayward has forecast that the Conservatives will lose around 500 seats and 16 councils that it currently controls.
Kemi Badenoch seems at a loss as to what to do, beyond managing expectations with her admission that the local elections will be "very difficult" for the Conservatives. The elections come six months after Badenoch became leader of the Tory party, with her arguing that this short time frame hasn’t been enough for the party to "make inroads". Badenoch and the Tories' favourability ratings are low - with just 18% of people viewing the leader favourably and 25% for the party according to YouGov.
However, it won't all be plain sailing for Labour either, as they are expected to win around 300 seats, the same number they won at these county council elections four years ago. Perhaps the most discouraging part of Hayward's forecast is that Labour is likely to fail to take seats in areas “they should have won” in the Midlands and the North.
These traditionally Labour, "Red Wall" areas are where Reform UK is expected to pick up seats. However, these are just polls—indicators of potential outcomes—and may also reflect the level of media coverage Reform UK has received, including reports of polls placing them ahead of both Labour and the Tories, as well as Nigel Farage’s repeated claims that the party will do well in these elections.
One such area, where both an Electoral Calculus poll for the Telegraph and Hayward’s poll have suggested Reform could do well, and even take control of the council, is Doncaster—the only Labour-controlled council up for election on 1 May.
Earlier this week, I visited Doncaster to find out how locals are planning to vote on 1 May and test the theory that Reform UK might win big in the former mining town. Keep your eyes peeled for that story next Monday.
Predictions aside, Hayward's analysis of recent election results shows that of the 27 seats where Reform has contested by-elections since the start of 2025, they’ve won only four. In two by-elections in rural Essex in March, Reform was expected to do well but failed to secure any seats. Whether or not Reform achieves big gains, the left must ensure they don't continue the race to the bottom to compete with Nigel Farage's anti-immigration populism.
In other news, Andrea Jenkyns, Reform UK's mayoral candidate for Lincolnshire is facing a challenge over her right to stand in the county, as she lives in Yorkshire and has said she will only move back to Lincolnshire if she wins the mayoralty. The complaint will be considered at a hearing tomorrow.
Have a good evening!
