Amid protests, Chile President offers rescue package, seeks forgiveness
Unrest began last week when a rise in subway fares led to student protests, but then spread nationwide, fueled by frustration among many Chileans who feel they have note shared in the economic advances in one of Latin America’s wealthiest nations.
Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera announced an ambitious raft of measures on Tuesday, aiming to quell protests against his government with a guaranteed minimum wage, a hike in the state pension offering and the stabilisation of electricity costs.
