Water for Planet
Water for Planet
Natural water storage is shrinking, pollution pressures are mounting, and floods and droughts are intensifying. The World Bank Group supports countries in managing water sustainably, reducing climate and disaster risks, and protecting the ecosystems that sustain life on Earth.
https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/waterresourcesmanagement
The world has crossed the planetary boundary for freshwater—the threshold for how much water can be withdrawn without destabilizing Earth’s systems. Both green water (soil and vegetation moisture) and blue water (surface and groundwater) are under unsustainable pressure, disrupting the balance that regulates rainfall, runoff, and recharge.

Water for People
Water for People
Over 2 billion people lack safe drinking water, and 3.4 billion lack proper sanitation—key risks for child mortality and stunting. The World Bank Group helps countries improve water and sanitation services through policy reforms, stronger institutions, and smart incentives.
https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/water-for-people
Water plays a critical role in public health, economic growth, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability. However, in many parts of the world, water and sanitation services remain unreliable, unaffordable, or unsafe. These deficiencies lead to significant human, economic, and environmental costs, especially for poor and vulnerable populations.
Water for Food
Water for Food
The World Bank Group supports countries to transform agricultural water management—boosting productivity, building resilience, improving livelihoods, advancing equity, and protecting natural systems, to feed a growing population on a livable planet.
https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/climate-resilient-irrigation
Water is essential for food production and a cornerstone of global food security. Yet, at current levels of performance, agricultural water systems can sustainably feed only 3.4 billion people—far below the 10 billion people projected to inhabit the planet by 2050.

Frontier Market Economies: Promise, Performance, and Prospects

Frontier markets—a subset of emerging market and developing economies characterized by meaningful but limited access to international financial markets—have considerable promise. Already home to one-fifth of the world’s population, but only 5 percent of its output, today’s frontier markets are projected to account for most of the global population increase to 2050. Many frontier markets have large natural resource endowments. Relative to other developing economies, they also have more physical capital, healthier and better-educated workforces, and stronger institutions. Access to international markets provides financing opportunities. Outcomes in frontier markets will be pivotal for global job creation and development progress.

Governments worldwide invest billions in labor market programs—self-employment and micro-entrepreneurship support, training initiatives, job placement services, wage subsidies—all designed to connect people with better employment opportunities. The results? A mixed bag of remarkable successes and underwhelming impacts. However, the key question is not whether these programs work, but rather: What makes the difference between a program that delivers real impact and one that falls flat?

The world woke up stunned on Jan 3 to the news of "Operation Absolute Resolve". In brazen defiance of international law and conventional diplomatic conduct, the United States struck the capital of Venezuela, abducted President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and illegally transferred them to New York for what Washington terms as a "trial". Shortly afterward, US President Donald Trump bluntly announced that the US would now "run" Venezuela and tap into the country's oil resources.

From training to digital jobs: Preparing women for e-commerce careers in Tajikistan with PARWONA Isabel NetoYaroslav EferinKate Gromova January 22, 2026 This page in: English
https://blogs.worldbank.org/en/psd/training-to-digital-jobs-preparing-women-for-e-commerce-careers-
The Tajik proverb “A candle does not lose its light by lighting another” reflects a deeper economic truth: growth is not a zero-sum game. When access to skills, information, and employment is broadened, new capacity is created in the labor market benefiting both workers and firms. In Tajikistan, this logic applies most clearly to women, whose participation in the labor market remains limited even as demand for skilled workers continues to grow.

In 2017, a ransomware spread across multiple countries, causing an estimated $10 billion in damage to businesses worldwide. More recently, in Costa Rica, a major incident in 2022 forced the government to declare a national state of emergency and resulted in losses up to 2.4% of GDP.
Rethinking Resilience: Adapting to a Changing Climate
https://www.worldbank.org/en/publication/rethinking-resilience?intcid=ecr_hp_dataC_en_ext
For the world’s poorest people, climate change does not announce itself in parts per million. It arrives as a ruined harvest, a flooded shopfront, and lost learning as children are kept out of school. The most consequential climate-policy question for developing economies is not only how much carbon the world emits, but how quickly people, firms, and governments can prepare for shocks, recover from them, and learn to do better next time. To ensure that a bad day, week, or season does not become a bad decade, the principal response to climate change for developing economies should be to quickly become more resilient to it.
International Debt Report 2025

Frontier Market Economies: Promise, Performance, and Prospects
https://www.worldbank.org/en/research/publication/frontier-markets?cid=ECR_E_NewsletterWeekly_EN_EXT&deliveryName=DM272628
Inflation in Emerging and Developing Economies
https://www.worldbank.org/en/research/publication/inflation-in-emerging-and-developing-economies
Emerging market and developing economies, like advanced economies, have experienced a remarkable decline in inflation over the past half-century. Yet, research into this development has focused almost exclusively on advanced economies. Inflation in Emerging and Developing Economies (PDF, 17.6 MB) fills that gap, providing the first comprehensive and systematic analysis of inflation in emerging market and developing economies. It examines how inflation has evolved and become synchronized among economies; what drives inflation globally and domestically; where inflation expectations have become better-anchored; and how exchange rate fluctuations can pass through to inflation. To reach its conclusions, this book employs cutting edge empirical approaches. It also offers a rich dataset of multiple measures of inflation for a virtually global sample of countries over a half-century to spur further research into this important topic.
A Decade After the Global Recession
https://www.worldbank.org/en/research/publication/decade-after-global-recession
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the 2009 global recession. Most emerging market and developing economies weathered the global recession relatively well, in part by using the sizeable fiscal and monetary policy ammunition accumulated during the prior years of strong growth. However, their growth prospects weakened since then, and many have less policy space.
Global Waves of Debt: Causes and Consequences
https://www.worldbank.org/en/research/publication/waves-of-debt
The global economy has experienced four waves of debt accumulation over the past fifty years. The first three debt waves ended with financial crises in many emerging and developing economies. The latest, since 2010, has already witnessed the largest, fastest and most broad-based increase in debt in these economies. Their total debt has risen by 54 percentage points of GDP to a historic peak of almost 170 percent of GDP in 2018.
Global Productivity: Trends, Drivers, and Policies
https://www.worldbank.org/en/research/publication/global-productivity
The COVID-19 pandemic struck the global economy after a decade that featured a broad-based slowdown in productivity growth. Global Productivity: Trends, Drivers, and Policies (PDF, 28.2 MB) presents the first comprehensive analysis of the evolution and drivers of productivity growth, examines the effects of COVID-19 on productivity, and discusses a wide-range of policies needed to rekindle productivity growth. The book also provides a far-reaching dataset of multiple measures of productivity for up to 164 advanced economies and emerging market and developing economies and introduces a new sectoral database of productivity.
The Long Shadow of Informality: Challenges and Policies
https://www.worldbank.org/en/research/publication/informal-economy
A large percentage of workers and firms operate in the informal economy, outside the line of sight of governments in emerging market and developing economies. This may hold back the recovery in these economies from the deep recessions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic—unless governments adopt a broad set of policies to address the challenges of widespread informality. This study is the first comprehensive analysis of the extent of informality and its implications for a durable economic recovery and for long-term development. It finds that pervasive informality is associated with significantly weaker economic outcomes—including lower government resources to combat recessions, lower per capita incomes, greater poverty, less financial development, and weaker investment and productivity.
Commodity Markets: Evolution, Challenges, and Policies
https://www.worldbank.org/en/research/publication/commodity-markets
Commodity markets are integral to the global economy. Understanding what drives developments of these markets is critical to the design of policy frameworks that facilitate the economic objectives of sustainable growth, inflation stability, poverty reduction, food security, and the mitigation of climate change.
The Great Reversal: Prospects, Risks, and Policies in International Development Association Countries
https://www.worldbank.org/en/research/publication/prospects-risks-and-policies-in-IDA-countries
The 75 economies eligible for low-interest loans and grants from the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) had made notable progress against some important development objectives over the first two decades of this century. Despite this, on the eve of the COVID-19 pandemic, significant development gaps persisted, income convergence with advanced economies was slowing, and some vulnerabilities were rising.
Fiscal Vulnerabilities in Low-Income Countries
https://www.worldbank.org/en/research/publication/fiscal-vulnerabilities
The world’s 26 poorest economies—home to about 40 percent of all people who live on less than $2.15 a day—are deeper in debt than at any time since 2006 and increasingly vulnerable to natural disasters and other shocks. Yet international aid as a share of their GDP has dwindled to a two-decade low, starving many of much-needed affordable financing.
Fragile and Conflict-Affected Situations: Intertwined Crises, Multiple Vulnerabilities
https://www.worldbank.org/en/research/publication/fragile-and-conflict-affected-situations-vulnerabilities
Economies in fragile and conflict-affected situations (FCS) are burdened by weak institutions and are particularly vulnerable to overlapping shocks—including conflict, natural disasters, commodity price swings, and global downturns. Nearly three-quarters of FCS economies have remained classified as such for over a decade, highlighting the persistence of their challenges and underlying fragility. Limited fiscal space further constrains these economies from responding to shocks and investing in essential services such as education, health, and infrastructure.
