Domestic food price inflation remains high in many low- and middle-income countries. Inflation higher than 5% is experienced in 70% of low-income countries (6.2 percentage points lower), 47.8% of lower-middle-income countries (3. percentage points lower), 36% of upper-middle-income countries (2.0 percentage points lower), and 9.1% of high-income countries (0.2 percentage points higher). In real terms, food price inflation exceeded overall inflation in 59.8% of the 164 countries where data is available.

Subitha Banu, fondly known as Bhai Amma, arrives like clockwork at 10 am at her small roadside stall in Erode, in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu, bearing two large vats of biryani. On a good day, she sells out her stock by noon and goes on to cook a spicy mutton or chicken curry for the men who frequent the wine shop next to her. At night, she returns with a stock of eggs, to whip up omelets for the evening clientele. By 8.30pm, when she has made a profit of INR 700-800, she returns home with her son, to begin anew the next day. This savvy entrepreneur would now like to double her earnings by expanding her little stall, employing more people, and increasing her offerings. But for this she will need an investment of about INR 1,00,000.

People close to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are exploring a proposal that would reduce the role of the American Medical Association in determining what Medicare pays for medical services, four sources familiar with the process told STAT’s Rachel Cohrs Zhang. The AMA runs a panel of doctors that make recommendations to Medicare about how much services should cost. The proposal, which is still in early stages, would wrest this influence away from the main physician lobby.
It’s not a new idea — such proposals have been periodically raised by Republicans for the past two decades, but haven’t ever been implemented. RFK Jr., who is President-elect Trump’s pick for Secretary of Health and Human Services, has decried the influence of big business in health care. He’s also sparred with the AMA in the past over his views on vaccines.
